The Mind of an Artist

Image
Art Student, Chiamaka Okenwa, answers the question, 'What runs through the mind of an artist before the birth of a true masterpiece?' This is a question that plagues everyone, especially in today's chaotic world where your identity is easily lost. The answer to this question is what I have set out to find in my visit to 'Identities', an exhibition at Denk Spaces. At the entrance to the gallery was a display by the exhibiting artist Erasmus Onyishi. What had at first appeared to be a mere tangle of wires and clutter took form upon more careful observation as a colony of ants marching up the wall. This mixed media piece, Openly Closed, was perhaps what opened our minds to the existence of other forms of art apart from realism, a concept we had been more or less closed off to. Stepping into the building, eyes began to fill with wonder. Each separate work was a colorful and vivacious expression of the same, special theme: Identity. The exhibiting artists had ide...

Is Art Necessary for Life?

I am an artist at heart and an accountant by profession. I make paper collage paintings and also enjoy painting with acrylic on canvas. I particularly like learning new techniques and styles of painting. However for some time now I have been plagued by the question "Is art necessary?'' I have felt perhaps I ought to put my time to better use. Do something really productive and worthwhile. Do something that would improve the world, something really useful and perhaps to make a difference. And also find my purpose. Yes, the perennial question - is this all there is? Suddenly making art started to feel like a kind of selfish indulgence. Like I should have utilized my time to do something more important. So I started to think if any art was necessary at all. Every single day I read the morning paper. I read to keep myself informed of the news. The news is of crimes committed. Of horrible crimes against women and little children. Of the destruction wrought by natural calam...

Go-To-Heaven Card???

Go-To-Heaven Card??? When I was a child, Monopoly was one of my most favorite board games. We could play for hours to acquire the most property. The main objective was to own a couple of hotels on Eloff Street. With hard work, good planning and a bit of luck here and there you could eventually become a property mogul. Some of us colluded to have another player declared bankrupt. Some crooked and borrowed money from the bank and "forgot" to pay it back. Yes, not every player's strategy smelt so fresh. I was totally afraid of going to jail because it would be fatal to have to sit out a couple of rounds. The best of all for me was to land on the "chance" space and, best of all, to get a "Get out of jail free" card. This card could give me that extra little push to eventually win the game. Monopoly is just a smaller version of life. We all start life on an equal footing. We arrive with nothing. Some people play nicely according to the rul...
